Costa Calma

Beaches

Costa Calma has quite a few different beaches in and near the resort. While most tourists here will use only the Playas de Costa Calma beach, the Playa Esmeralda and Playas Agustin Millares are good options for a change of scenery within walking distance.

Playas de Costa Calma

The Playas de Costa Calma is the main centrally located beach in the resort and is right in front of most of the hotels. With a few beach bars and sunbeds on the beach, this is a very family-friendly beach. There is also an option to learn or practise surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing here.

Playa Esmeralda

For those who enjoy nudism, the Playa Esmeralda is located just out of sight of the main beach. This beach is much smaller than the Costa Calma beach.

Playa Agustin Millares

Also just out of sight of the central Costa Calma beach, you have the Playa Agustin, a smaller beach that makes for a nice change of scenery when staying in Costa Calma longer than a week.

Playas de Matas Blancas and Playa de Sotavento

If you like to walk or explore a bit, then these beaches are also a good option. Located just a few kilometres outside Costa Calma, you can easily walk to both.

Best hotels in Costa Calma

Costa Calma has many excellent hotels but also many low-budget lower-quality accommodations, so it is essential to read the reviews before booking. Another thing that is important to consider is if you want to only stay in the hotel are also want to enjoy the rest of the resort. This is important as there are 2 very different parts to Costa Calma. One part is in the front next to the beach with most of the restaurants, shops and bars nearby and one part is located behind the main road a bit up the hill. From here it is much more difficult to go to the beach, restaurants or bars. So before booking make sure to consider what you want to do during your holiday and to look up the location of your hotel on a map.

Of all the hotels I have visited in this area, these I can advise:

  • H10 Playa Esmeralda: Adult-only hotel located close to the beach and in a quiet and peaceful location.
  • H10 Tindaya: Large family-friendly hotels with many pools, great entertainment and high-quality food.
  • R2 Rio Calma: Good for the gardens and relaxation located on the outside of Costa Calma with its own private beach area.
  • SBH Costa Calma Palace: Great location in Costa Calma, close to the restaurants, bars, shops and beach.

Things to do in Costa Calma

In Costa Calma, you can do a lot of watersports like surfing and sailing. But that is about it, in the resort itself. If you like to explore more of the island from here, there are many options as the bus lines passing here are pretty good and can get you to nearby places quite fast. Of course, you can also do so by organised excursions that will take you to the Ajuy Caves, Betancuria and cheese or aloe vera museums.

Here is my complete list of things to do in Fuerteventura.

Restaurants, bars and nightlife

Even tho Costa Calma is a pretty big place; there are not that many restaurants, bars and nightlife. Also, because Costa Calma is so big and many of these restaurants and bars are spread randomly all over the area, you might not easily find or reach them, especially if you are staying in the back of the resort. This means that for most people all-inclusive or self-catering is the best option in this area. However, it also means it is a great place to go if you appreciate peace, quiet and a good night’s sleep.

Fuerteventura airport to Costa Calma

Costa Calma is located pretty far in the ‘s South, island’s South, making it not easy to get to. It is 64 km or about 1 hour of driving away from the airport.

  • Public transport to Costa Calma is possible, but many of the buses take many stops (sometimes over 20) and can take a long time to get there. If you want to do so, the price is 7.55 € per person.
  • A shuttle bus will get you to Costa Calma faster but needs to be booked before arriving, costing 12.24 €. It also has a lot of other benefits, like a guaranteed seat on the bus.
  • Reserving a taxi online before arriving has a fixed price of 88.75 €. Taking a taxi at the airport has a starting price of 64 € and will be more expensive when in bad traffic, at the weekend or evening.

This is the company I used and advise for booking a taxi or shuttle online. For more information about public transport, you can have a look here.

Weather in Costa Calma & when to go

Costa Calma can be visited all year round because of the good climate Fuerteventura has compared to some other holiday destinations in Spain. Therefore, you can expect warm and comfortable temperatures all year round.

August and September are usually the best and warmest months with comfortable water temperatures and are generally the best months to visit Costa Calma. All other months are pleasant except for November and December as these are a bit more rainy and cloudy, yet this is minimal with only 3 rainy days per month. However, since prices in December are also generally higher on the island, it is worth avoiding, if possible, to get the best value for money.

Is Costa Calma the best holiday destination for you?

If you are booking one of the hotels in the front of the resort and not in the back, then your hotel will have direct beach access in most cases. So if you enjoy the beach and easy access from and to your hotel without climbing high hills as you have in other resorts in Fuerteventura, Costa Calma could be your best holiday destination. However, do consider that this resort is pretty big but has limited bars and restaurants, so if you enjoy eating out and a lot of bubbling nightlife, this resort might not be for you.
