Have you seen those white nostalgic-looking fishing villages and white houses in brochures or web pages about Gran Canaria? Well, those are in Puerto de Mogan. It used to be a quiet little fishing village and still is. But recently some new and bigger hotels have moved into this area. Is that a bad thing? No, the front of the resort and nostalgic heart of Puerto de Mogan is still untouched, and now you can have a new modern hotel nearby.
Beaches
How is the beach in Puerto de Mogan? There is a lovely white sandy beach here mixed with a bit of black sand. It’s a beach with many restaurants next to it, so good for a beach day with the entire family. It’s often named one of the “must visit” beaches of Gran Canaria, but I would say it’s more an average beach as you can find many in Gran Canaria. In total, with the harbour, market and many restaurants it is a nice and unique place to visit in Gran Canaria, so I think that is where this rumour comes from.
Hotels
Puerto de Mogan has seen some serious construction and adding of hotels in the last few years. That means that many of them are fresh, new and modern. Here are my three favourite ones:
- Hotel Puerto de Mogan THe Senses Collection is ideal if you want a nice little boutique hotel next to the beach.
- Cordial Mogan Playa is a beautiful and large family hotel with some stunning pools and gardens.
- Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Gran Canaria is recently build, sleek, modern and family-friendly.
Nightlife
Nightlife here is all about dining and having a relaxing few drinks next to the water. It is not a place where you will find late-night bars and clubbing. However, I must say that there is loads of construction and development in this area so that might change very soon.

Restaurants & bars
Puerto de Mogan has one of the largest selections of restaurants in Gran Canaria. Most of these are still pretty small and authentic. For example, in the Meloneras in Gran Canaria, you also have many restaurants to choose from, but many of them feel too big and impersonal. The restaurants in Puerto de Mogan are more personal and authentic. Especially the ones near the beach and in the little harbour area.
How to get to Puerto de Mogan
Puerto de Mogan is 53 km from the Gran Canaria airport (LPA):
- Public transport: 6.35€
- Shuttle bus: 12.00€
- Taxi: 54€

Shopping
Shopping in Puerto de Mogan has changed a lot over the years. It used to be that there was almost nothing, but now the resort has a brand new shopping centre, large supermarkets and even more under construction.
Things to do in Puerto de Mogan
Puerto de Mogan has one of the biggest markets on the island on Friday. Otherwise, there is not much to do here except for the usual touristy things. Do take some time to watch the sunset here as well. There is the sunset spot that is famous for this, but it gets often way too crowded. Since this is the last town before the mountain area, you can have a great view of the sunset from pretty much everywhere. Maybe a nice restaurant or bar might be better than the sunset spot.
If you want to make the best out of your holiday, see more of the island and save some money on airport taxis or transfers at the same time, rent a car at Gran Canaria airport.
