Cala Bona

Beaches

The Cala Bona beach

When it comes to beaches, Cala Bona has a unique offer. That’s the best way to say it as there aren’t too many white sandy beaches as in most other resorts in Mallorca.   However, there are many mini small rocky beaches. So if you are looking for privacy and tranquillity… this place is excellent. Mainly to do some snorkelling and exploring, it might be ideal for you. However, if you are travelling with small kids and like to spend a lot of time on the beach, make sure you are close to the main beach of Cala Bona.

Hotels

Cala Bona has some charming hotels. Especially Protur and Hipotel have many hotels in this area of Mallorca. However, one of my favourites that I would advise for a family holiday fitting in most price ranges is the Protur Bonaire in a quiet and secluded spot of Cala Bona. You can find the prices and other Cala Bona deals on Booking.com. For more ideas on where to stay and hotels, you can find the complete selection of top hotels in Mallorca I visited here.

Nightlife

Cala Bona is a very tranquil place, and for this reason, there is not much party or nightlife.  So if you are looking to party or go clubbing, this might not be the right place. However, there are some clubs, party life, and live performances in Cala Millor next door.  Cala Millor is just a short walk away from most of the hotels in Cala Bona.

Shopping

Cala Bona isn’t the right place for a shopping holiday. However, in between Cala Bona and Cala Millor, there is a market each evening during the summer season with loads of fun stands to explore and have a look around. Also, the neighbouring resort of Cala Millor has a pretty nice shopping street that is best in the evenings or late afternoons. The shops are open here during the daytime, but it loses a lot of its shopping charm as most people are out on the beach. In the evening the shopping streets become much more lively.

Restaurants & bars

Cala Bona has many excellent restaurants, especially in the harbour area.  Most of these stay pretty authentic to Spanish and traditional cuisine, but you, of course, find more common foods for the little ones in most of these restaurants if they are fussy eaters.

How to get to Cala Bona

Cala Bona is far away from the Palma Airport (PMI), so it is best to arrive prepared. There is a bus to Cala Bona without the need to transfer in Palma. However, it still takes a long time, and it stops at many places along the way. Also, these buses don’t go often, only in the summer season and can be confusing for non-Spanish speakers even though the drivers are friendly and will try to speak English in most cases. Therefore, a taxi might be the best option if you are travelling with 4 people.

Things to do near Cala Bona

The two main things to do in Cala Bona are the boat trips and the Cuevas del Drach. There are all kinds of boat trips that visit markets, have glass bottoms, go snorkelling and swimming along the way, but also one that will take you to the Cuevas del Drach in Porto Cristo. This is a great day out for the entire family if you want to see something unique. However, when visiting Cuevas del Drach on an excursion, watch out if it includes something like a “free trip to the pearl factory” as this is not very interesting and is mostly there to sell you the fake pearls Mallorca is famous for.
