Costa del Silencio

Costa del Silencio is one of the more budget-friendly holiday destinations in Tenerife. While the area has a beach, the Playa de Montana Amarilla swimming area is the main attraction, with crystal-clear waters. Nightlife is relatively relaxed here. This area is ideal for affordability and tranquillity. The authentic Spanish coastal town, beach, and marina of neighbouring Las Galettas make for an excellent addition to this area, with more things to see and do.

Beaches

Costa del Silencio has a unique place to swim in Tenerife, the Playa de Montana Amarilla.  The water is clear because it’s primarily pebbles and rocks, so no sand can get in the way, which makes it extremely good for snorkelling. If you want to spend some time here, there is also a cute little beach bar, and you might even want to walk up Amarilla mountain to get a great view if you get a bit restless or enjoy a bit of adventure. You also have a great place to relax on these rocky platforms without getting sand everywhere.

On the way to Las Galletas from here, you will also find a small sandy beach a bit hidden away, Playa la Ballena. While the path leading here is less than picturesque, the beach itself is pretty nice.

Further on, you also have the large Playa las Galletas, with dark sands and a pretty relaxed setting except for the road next to it, but you will not notice it much. You can also do many watersports from the nearby harbour area.

Where to stay in Costa del Silencio

The Costa del Silencio has very few hotels. It is primarily holiday rental apartments and houses where people stay during their holidays in this area.  Most of it is budget accommodation, so this could be a great place to stay if you want cheap holidays.  Have a look at the Costa del Silencio page on booking.com.

  • Watersports: From the nearby marina of Las Galletas, you can go to plenty of watersports, like diving and waterskiing.
  • Finca Las Margaritas Banana Experience: A local banana farm you can visit with guided or self-guided tours and tasters.
  • Adventurers: Hike along the coastline to Golf del Sur or Palm Mar.

  • Hire a car: By hiring a car, you can easily visit many excellent nearby attractions, such as Monkey Park, Camel Park, Jungle Park, and Siam Water Park.

This list is of things to do in or near Costa del Silencio. But there is much more to see and do on the island. You can find a full list of the top things to do and not do in Tenerife here.

Restaurants

There are quite a few restaurants and places to eat in the Costa del Silencio, many of which cater to an international audience. Most are located in the Ten-Bel shopping centre and near “The Bathers” fountain, with the swimming people statues.

However, when you want some of the more traditional Spanish cuisine, have a look next to the sea in the Las Galletas area, a small walk away. In addition, the Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas area restaurants have very fair prices compared to some of the more touristy destinations in Tenerife.

Buying a takeaway pizza or ice cream in Heladeria Pizza Valentino and eating it on the nearby beach at sunset, is a must for me, each time I visit.

Nightlife

Costa del Silencio is a relaxed place. You will not find any clubs or busy nightlife here. It’s mostly about having a few drinks and enjoying the warm summer evenings. Yet, some places choose to stay open until nighttime.

Tenerife airport to Costa del Silencio

Shuttle buses and tourists at the Tenerife South Airport

Costa del Silencio is only 12 kilometres from the Tenerife South Airport (TFS). The Tenerife North Airport (TFN) is 78 kilometres away. So it is best to fly to the Tenerife South Airport:

  • Public transport (2.45 €/pp): A good and cheap option for solo travellers and couples, but it is not ideal as, in most cases, you will have to transfer buses at least once. At some times, there is a direct bus without transfers, but it does not run often.
  • Shuttle bus online (5.16 €/pp): A better option for just a few euros more, no need to transfer and drop off at your hotel, not a random bus stop.
  • Taxi or minibus online (31.06 €): The best option for those travelling with four or more people or needing child safety seats.
  • Taxi at the airport (19.00 €/pp): Also a good option, but the price is never this low, especially on weekends and evenings, when it is much higher. It is usually better to book online, as pricing is about the same, and service is generally better. There can be a maximum of four people in the taxis, waiting at the airport.

Here, you can find the timetables and prices for public transportation and easily book a minibus, shuttle, or taxi.

When to go

Weather in Tenerife by month
An overview of the weather in Tenerife by month. Sunshine, daylight, rainfall, rainy days, temperature and sea temperature (Celsius).

Costa del Silencio, like most of Tenerife, has great weather all year round, comparable to the most popular beaches in the South of Tenerife. However, it is often a bit more windy here. This can make it ideal in summer but can also feel a bit colder in winter. Also, know that during October and May, this area can feel a bit empty, and some bars and restaurants might close for holidays or renovations, but most still stay open.

If you like peace and quiet, this place offers excellent budget-friendly deals in May. If you like a bit more people around, June and September offer excellent value for money.

Is Costa del Silencio the best holiday destination for you?

Costa del Silencio is an excellent choice if you are looking for an affordable and tranquil holiday experience in Tenerife. The nearby Las Galettas make it especially interesting for budget-friendly holidaymakers.

Those looking for a vibrant nightlife and clubbing scene will not find it here. Also, if you like nicely maintained touristy white sand beaches, the more adventurous and unique swimming options in this area will not suit you. Those who enjoy shopping a lot will also not find it here. This area can also feel rough and poorly maintained in some places, but improvements have been made in the last few years.
