Gran Canaria: Weather & when to go

When to go where in Gran Canaria

When to go where in Gran Canaria: green = good, orange = ok , red = avoid

In the chart above, a clear overview of where is best to go on holiday in Gran Canaria depending on the month you are going. It takes into consideration a lot of factors and not only the weather as the weather is pretty much nice and hot all year round on Gran Canaria. So if you find a good deal or last-minute package holiday and are just looking for a sunny and hot escape, then you can pretty much go to Gran Canaria any month and have a great holiday.

The resorts of Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles, Meloneras and Puerto Rico in the South of the island are great to visit all year round. Also, in March, April, October and November, they are better options than other smaller resorts on the island that can feel empty and might also have fewer restaurants and bars open in these months. However, if you are looking for a sunny beach holiday, try and avoid Puerto de las Nieves (and, to a lesser extent, Las Palmas) in the winter months as they usually get more rain than the South of Gran Canaria in this period. Winter escapes to sun and warm weather

November, December, January and February are the winter season months in Gran Canaria. But if you compare it to most other European holiday destinations, Gran Canaria has a much better climate. Just try to avoid Puerto de las Nieves (and, to a lesser extend, Las Palmas) in these months as a holiday destination because there is more rain there in winter than in other places on the island.

The average temperature has a high of 21°C and a low of 15°C. Rain is two to three days a month or almost non-existent. The sea temperature is 18°C. Ir might feel a little bit chilly, but for most people, this is fine to take a swim.

In these months, you will mostly find an older generation here and people from the colder countries of Europe like most Scandinavian countries who come here to escape the colder climate in their countries.

The best, driest and hottest weather

If you want to have the hottest and driest months to go to Gran Canaria for a beach or pool holiday, then you want to have a look at May, June, July, August and September.

All these more or less have the same temperature, so there’s not so much difference between them. The average temperature is going to be 26°C, and the low is 21°C, but there’s also, of course, going to be plenty of days it will be hotter than this. The sea temperature is 22°C. So this is a great temperature to go swimming and enjoy the water. In October, the weather starts to change a little bit as more rain comes to the island. The temperature will still be fine, but there’s can already be two or three days of rain a month in October.

The summer months are also when you find a younger generation in Gran Canaria. More people go party and go clubbing than in the winter season when there’s mostly an older generation in Gran Canaria. Except for maybe the months of December during the Christmas holidays. Then there’s also a younger generation here in Gran Canaria. If you want to go clubbing and party… look at the breaks students in schools and universities have!

Best time for budget deals

If you are travelling on a budget or if you want to find the best months to get the best deals for your hotel, then have a look at March and April (but outside of the Easter holidays). During the Easter holidays, it is more expensive.

The average temperature is going to be somewhere in between the summer and winter seasons. High of 21°C and a low of 16°C. Rain is almost non-existent with one day a month only—sea temperatures 20°C, so nice to take a swim.

But by far the best month on a budget is November (but always outside of the school holidays, because then the prices, of course, go up). November might be the best month on a budget as prices are similar to March and April, but the pool and seawater are already heated up from the summer season. The weather is a bit wetter than April and March, but not by much.
