Lanzarote: Weather & when to go

The right time for you to visit Lanzarote depends on your situation. If you’re travelling with a family or maybe you’re looking for budget deals? Or perhaps you want to go clubbing and partying? Or possibly you want to spend the entire time sunbathing on the beaches in Lanzarote? Here is a quick guide to when is the right time for you to visit Lanzarote.

When to go where in Lanzarote

When to go where in Lanzarote: green = good, orange = ok , red = avoid

In the above image, I give you a quick and easy guide to where I would advise you to go on holiday in Lanzarote depending on the month you are going. It considers much more than just the weather but also what is open in the resorts, attractions on the island, pricing, and much more.

Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise are the best option all year round as they are big resorts and have a wide choice of nightlife, bars and restaurants all year round. The other smaller resort like Puerto Calero and Matagorda, even tho having the same climate, can feel pretty empty and abandoned in the less busy months like March and November.

The wettest month is December, but it is still not a lot of rain. However, because it is a very popular month to go on holiday to Lanzarote, prices are generally higher. So pricing and the rain make it the month I would advise Lanzarote the least if you can go any other month.

Lanzarote price by month

To visit Lanzarote on a budget, the best months are March, October and November, while the more expensive ones are June, July, August, December and January. February, April, March and September have the more moderate pricing.

School holidays, like Easter and Christmas, are always among the more expensive as well.

Temperature

Temperature by month in Lanzarote (high and low, Celsius)

The hottest summer months on Lanzarote are June, July, August, September and October. However, do know that October gets some more rain, so if you are looking for sunny beach holiday weather, you might want to avoid this month if you can go in June, July, August or September instead.

Daylight and sunshine hours

Daylight and sunshine hours by month in Lanzarote

The months of May, June, July and August have the most sunshine hours in Lanzarote. Almost double compared to some of the winter months like December. Yet the temperature stays pretty similar all year round, with only about 5 degrees difference between summer and winter months.

Rainfall and rainy days

Rainfall in Lanzarote by month (mm)

December is the only rainy month on Lanzarote. Of course, other winter months also have rainy days, but it is about half the rainfall or less than in December.

Rainy days by month in Lanzarote

Lanzarote has few rainy days. Especially the summer months like May, June, July, August and September have no rain usually. There are also fewer than 4 rainy days per month in winter, so rain is not something to worry about when going on holiday to Lanzarote.

Sea temperature

Lanzarote has pleasant sea temperatures all year round for swimming. The first months of the year are a bit colder, but the difference is not much.

When is the right month to go to Lanzarote?

Winter escapes

October, November, December, January and February are the winter months… so the colder months for Lanzarote, but still, the climate is okay. It’s also for this reason that many people from other countries in Europe and the colder countries like Scandinavian countries like to come here around this time, to escape the snow and the rain in their countries.

The average temperature has a high of 22°C, and a low of 15°C and rain is about 1 day every two weeks. So it’s very little rain, and the sea temperature is 19°C. So for most people, this is a great temperature to go swimming, but for some, it might also feel a bit chilly still.

Do know December is the more rainy month, but still, it’s neglectable even tho it is the wettest one out of these five months.

I do quickly want to point out that if you’re part of a younger generation who comes here to party and go clubbing, this is not the right time for you as this time is most popular with an older generation. If you are looking to come party, come on the times when people have holidays. Like the universities, colleges and schools holidays and make sure you pick one of the more busy destinations in Lanzarote like Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca.

The hottest summer months

If you’re looking for the hottest summer months, then know that May, June, July, August and September are your best bet.

The average temperature has a high of 28°C and a low of 20°C. Rain you usually are not going to see any of during these months, and the sea temperature is 21°C. So for pretty much everyone, this is the ideal temperature to go swimming.

Do know that July and August are much more expensive but only offer the same climate and weather as the other months. So if you want great weather and want to save some money and have the opportunity (if you are not tied to school holidays), come in June and September. You will have the same weather, but it’s going to be cheaper, and you’re going to find better deals hotels.

Best on a budget

March and April, outside of the Easter holidays, also offer the best deals usually.

March and April have temperatures between summer and winter. High of 23°C and a low of 16°C and rain is only going to be one day a month (so very, very little) and sea temperatures will be 18°C.

I would, however, for travelling on a budget advise November. This is because you can generally find the same prices compared to March and April for holidays and accommodation in Lanzarote. But in November, the sea is usually still a little bit hotter from the high season, and the temperatures are also a little more desirable. So this is the best month for those travelling to Lanzarote on a budget.
