Maspalomas

The Maspalomas beach and dunes

Maspalomas is the largest resort in Gran Canaria and has been around for over 50 years. Because of this, it is very well known and has become the most visited holiday destination in Gran Canaria with the largest selection of hotels, restaurants, bars and extensive nightlife.

Beaches

Maspalomas is sometimes confused with Playa del Ingles, but Maspalomas is actually Playa del Ingles and Meloneras and some other smaller areas.  All of this together has a large selection of beaches.

They all have fresh white sands, and most of them are within walking distance from bars, restaurants and shops.  The only exception here is the main beach of Maspalomas, located in the dunes and a far walk away from everything. One of the main reasons for this is that this is a nude beach, and it is very popular with the LGBTQ scene in this area.

Hotels

Maspalomas is so big it has lots of hotels and apartment complexes. Ranging from 1 star to 5+, you can find it all here. It would be tough to make a summary of my favourite ones since there are so many. You can find a complete list of my best hotels in Gran Canaria selection here.

Nightlife

Nightlife in Maspalomas

The party life in Maspalomas is in the Playa del Ingles area where you will find many bars, pubs and clubs, especially in the open-air shopping centres in this area.  As mentioned, there is an active LGBTQ scene here, so many clubs aim at this group but are, of course, open to the public as well.

The more relaxed, upscale, and pricey nightlife you will find in the newly constructed Meloneras area.

Restaurants & bars

You will find many restaurants in the resort, from all-you-can-eat budget places to fine dining.  You will find the budget and cheaper places in the Playa del Ingles area and some of the newer and more upscale restaurants you see in the Meloneras area. But, no matter what you are looking for, you can find it Maspalomas.

How to get to Maspalomas

Maspalomas is 32 km from the Gran Canaria airport (LPA):

  • Public transport: 4.10€
  • Shuttle bus: 5.50€
  • Taxi: 34€

Important things to know about taxis, shuttles and buses at the Gran Canaria airport and the companies I booked with and would advise, you can find here.

Shopping

The Maspalomas area, as mentioned before, is very big. So you can find everything here from shopping centres with touristy things (like in Playa del Ingles) to upscale branded fashion stores (like in Meloneras).

Things to do in Maspalomas

Maspalomas is centrally located in the South of Gran Canaria and has lots of hotels and accommodation. Because of this, you can find most of the major attractions in Gran Canaria very close by. If I had to advise one of the things to do, it would be the Palmitos Park. Much more than a zoo, it also has lots of shows for the entire family. Dolfin, eagles and parrot shows are presented several times a day.
